The President of the FIFA World Football Association, the Swiss Gianni Infantino, can be sure to support the Asian Confederation AFC in the re-election in 2023.
“The AFC and the Asian football family welcome President Infantino’s application for re-election. And I can assure you that we will be behind him,” said AFC President Scheich Salman Bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa (Bahrain) after a meeting of the executive -Committees.
The 52-year-old Infantino strives for a third term. He had succeeded Joseph S. Blatter (also Switzerland) in 2016. A maximum of three terms of a president are allowed.
Scheich Salman was in 2016 against Infantino candidate, who was confirmed in his office in 2019. In March, the Confederation at the FIFA Congress in Doha/Qatar confirmed his intention to run again for the FIFA presidential post.
However, there is always criticism of Infantino and its office – especially from the European Football Union (UEFA). The AFC belongs to 47 countries, the FIFA consists of a total of 211 member associations.
